Gum Bichromate

By Erin Mahoney
This photo is also pretty, right? Want to know how it's made? Thought so. The process used to make this photo is called Gum Bichromate. Gelatin is mixed with pigment and sensitized with chromium salts in order to make this print. The print is multilayered and the lighter parts have the least gum while the darker has the most.

Cyanotype Process

By Alessandra Hull
How was this beautiful photo made, you ask? Well, this photo was made via the cyanotype process. This process was the first picture producing method to not use silver to process the picture. The process turned the picture blue. It was used mostly for trial pictures as it was a fast and cheap way to develop a picture.

Collodian Process

 By Nicky Thompson
This here power photographic picture was made using the collodian method. Now what exactly is the collodian method? That's what I'm here to tell you:

The collodian process is done by coating the plate in a collodian mixture, putting it in silver nitrate, and then exposing the plate. This process was relatively inexpensive to others in the height of its popularity (1850s). The process leads to a brushed on look to the photograph.

Layers: Short and Tall

Raven is short, Chris and Brennan are tall. When put together, Raven looks very short compared to them. Also, Brennan and Chris have cute smiles so they deserve the shoutout they get in this layered photograph.

Layers: Isao and Raven

Isao and Raven are a super touchy couple and I thought they deserved a shout out in some of my pictures. For obvious reasons, the sign saying love is in the background and a picture of Raven laughing compliments the happy nature of the photo of them together.

Layers: Quandre

For this layer, I took a cute picture of Quandre and knew I had to make an edit of it. I thought the flower background coupled with the window complimented the pictures of Quandre really well. I removed some of the background of one photo so that all of Quandre could shine through.

Macro Grid 3

In my last grid I trolled around the art room and found some cool objects to take photos of. The aesthetic for this grid is the art room.

Macro Grid 2

For this grid I went with a simple dark grey cross with a light grey plus. I took a majority of these photos outside, either on the ground or a tree.

Macro Grid 1

I went for a nature and green aesthetic look for this grid. I decided to spice things up a little bit and added the picture of the lady bug in the middle. The red contrasts with the green to add even more "umph" to the grid.

Edit 3

I took the original photo while I was experimenting with the shutter speed and aperture. I enjoyed the way the picture came out so I decided to edit it. In the first edit, I increased the whites and the shadows. When I did this, the picture got a little grainier and it made it look like an old-timey photograph. For the second edit, I just made all the colors 100% vibrant. This ended up looking pretty cool as there were only patches of color and the rest of the picture was grey. In the final edit, I just changed the temperature to make the color of the photo a nice blue-grey.

Edit 4

This photo was taken while my model was reading a book. She was unaware of the fact that I was photographing her. I first messed around with the color, trying to make the hair of the model red. I eventually came out with a look that looked like it was from a 1940's billboard. The second one I just increased the contrast, the blacks and whites, and turned the photo into grey scale. Lastly, I increased the vibrancy of green, effectively turning my model into.

Edit 2

For the first photo I was just messing around and tried to take artsy photos of apple products. For the first edit I increased the exposure of the photo, trying to make the keyboard look golden. For the second edit I decreased the exposure, making everything darker. I then increased the whites to 100% which is why they are so vibrant. Lastly, I messed with the vibrancy of the colors within the photo, this is why what was once white, is now yellow.

Edit 1

For the original photo, I was playing with the aperture to make the background out of focus, bringing the focus onto the battery. For the first edit, I made the background and foreground lighter. This brought even more focus on the battery. For the second edit, I made the vibrancy of every color 100%, making a cool effect on the picture. Lastly, I just made some colors more vibrant, while decreasing the vibrancy of other.

Camera Controls

I like the stopped-time photo because each individual drop of water is clearly visible and you can tell how the water hits the cap of the jug. I like the blurred background photo of the lamps because it emphasizes the lamp in the foreground which makes it stand out even more than it does when the background is more visible. I did not any either of the photos to just purely show the difference in f stop and shutter speed. The color in this photo is supposed to be very plain so that the viewer focuses purely on the changes between the two photos.

Mood Picture

For this project, we were given the task of taking photos with color in mind.  While focusing on color we had to pay attention to five different ways colors are apparent in the world. The way color is apparent in this photo is the way it affects the mood (while also being complementary). The way color affects the mood in this photo it is to emphasize the bright colors to create a happy feeling. The bright orange contrasted with the blue background hints at a slightly carefree world. Without trying to overwhelm the viewer with colors, the image symbolizes a happy time in a happy place.
